There are absolutely LOADS of cool little characters you can choose
from. Even though it looks like the selection of players isn't large
with obviously recognisable one and two player variants, each variant
has it's own weapon system! For example, the Vic Viper (one player)
and Lord British (two player) have totally different weapon configurations,
and you don't even have to stick with the designated player variants!
Player One can select Lord British and vice versa...
But I digress... since there are loads of characters, I'll walk
you through the best five in my eyes... |
Lord British |
Hey! It's the Lord British! Quite possibly my favourite from Gradius
Gaiden, but anyway...
Lord-B has no Double weapon as you've probably noticed, and instead
you can choose from the Ripple or the noticeably more interesting
Laser weapon. Options make a reappearance too. Bombs come in the
shape of Twin Hawkwinds (with cute little legs =) and the shield?
That weird cog-thingy. You need to get about four shield powerups
before you can get it looking anything like it does here though... |
Doitsu |
Pretty funny cross between Ultimate Parodius' Koitsu (the original
bloke on the paper aeroplane) and the Vic Viper. Three Way shots
and Twin Lasers make up the arsenal, as well as those really cool
little blokes which parachute from your craft. COOL!!! |
Mike |
Well it had to happen - first Mambo's poor impression of the R-9
from R-Type Leo, and Kid Dracula's imitation of the Axelay, and
now Mike, making funny with the Darius impressions! Well, everything
is intact, from the Multi-Bomb and Laser, to the immensely powerful
Wave laser. The Force Field is a multipowered up shield, so stay
alive and you'll get to see a table floating around (!)... |
Ran |
The other cat, and more like the R-9 than Mambo ever was. Homing
Bits, a Reflect Laser and a Search Laser are staple of the impressive
armory. But why the hell do we have to use a paper bag as a shield??! |
Rupa |
A baby! How CUTE!!! Lemme see here...
A really powerful Wide Shot which is damned...erm...WIDE, and a
Search Vulcan, which basically is a forward firing shot with two
search lasers. Finally, we have a Multi Spread Gun which, when fully
powered up, fires six explosive mortars from all sides and can do
seroius damage... |
