Basic
Information
DoDonPachi is a vertically-oriented, vertically-scrolling shmup
developed by Cave. Atlus released this game for the arcade on 5
February 1997.
Typically, DoDonPachi is classified as a manic shmup. Basic
gameplay mechanics are as follows:
- Come into contact with a bullet or an
aerial enemy, and you lose one fighter.
- The game is over when you lose your last fighter.
- Unless you satisfy certain requirements, the game ends when you defeat the sixth area's boss.
Important factory settings are as follows:
- Difficulty is set at NORMAL. In increasing difficulty, the
available settings are EASY, NORMAL, HARD, and VERY HARD.
- You begin with three fighters. One fighter is added to
the fighter stock when your score passes the 6,000,000-point mark and another
is added at the 20,000,000-point mark.
Basic Operation
The joystick and at least two buttons are used to play DoDonPachi.
Functions are as follows:
- Joystick: The fighter moves in any of the eight cardinal
directions in which the joystick is moved. Note that the speed of
the fighter is the same in all directions. This means that the ship
will move slower to the left if the stick is moved down and left
than if it is moved just to the left.
- A button: Tapping on this button fires a round of shots.
Holding down this button fires a continuous laser beam.
- B button: Tapping only this button will launch a bomb that will
clear the entire screen of bullets and some enemies. Holding the A
button and tapping the B button will launch a wider, stronger laser
beam for a few seconds.
- C button: This button is disabled by default. Should the
operator choose to enable it, holding it down will fire rounds of
shots continuously.
Fighter type selection
|
In the fighter
type selection screen, there are three types to choose. The
fighter types have different option formations and damage strengths
in the main shot, option shot, and laser. After selecting a type,
you may choose to strengthen either the shot or the laser.
